Operations for hernias
What is a "hernia"?
A hernia (translated from Latin – hernia – a rupture of one part of the structure) is a disease characterized by a violation of the integrity of the abdominal wall or other enveloping and supporting membranes, resulting in the formation of openings through which the protrusion of internal organs occurs. As a rule, the exit of the organ occurs into the intermuscular area, subcutaneously or internally, in the presence of a cavity or pocket. Ventral hernias are considered to be the most common,
that is, hernias of the abdominal wall. They can be congenital or acquired, occur independently due to producing and predisposing factors (primary) or as a result of surgical intervention (postoperative), and can also recur. A hernia is one of the most common diseases on the globe (up to 4% of the entire population)
Symptoms and Course
The patient may not be aware of the presence of a hernia if the disease is asymptomatic. In some cases, discomfort and pain are noted.
What are the dangers of this pathology even in the absence of complaints? Despite the fact that the disease can remain unnoticed for a long time, there is always a risk of serious complications, including rupture, incarceration, inflammation, coprostasis, irreducibility, phlegmon, and other life-threatening conditions. Today, there are more than three hundred surgical and modified treatment methods. The Genesis Dnepr clinic offers the most modern and effective techniques, successfully used in leading clinics around the world.
Surgical treatment of hernias
Herniotomy (surgical treatment of hernia) is, in most cases, a minimally invasive and uncomplicated surgical intervention.
The duration of the surgery,
most often,
does not exceed one and a half hours.
Of course,
everything depends on the degree of development,
the location of occurrence, and the presence of complications.
For the removal of small hernias, the use of local anesthesia with a one-day hospital stay is possible;
accordingly,
in more serious cases, general anesthesia and a longer recovery time will be required.
Most hernias are treatable with the laparoscopic method, which has a number of advantages over open hernioplasty (herniotomy): reduced trauma, shorter postoperative period and rehabilitation, simultaneous performance of concurrent surgeries, minimal scarring, reduced pain syndrome, and others. Depending on the indications, the repair is either performed using the autologous method, utilizing only the patient's own tissues,
either by using high-quality artificial reconstructive materials - implants (meshes, mesh prostheses).
