Gastroscopy

Who is prescribed gastroscopy (EGDS)? This examination is indicated for suspected various diseases of the esophagus and stomach, as well as for preventive purposes to detect precancerous or early cancer changes. How to prepare for the examination? Gastroscopy is performed on an empty stomach. The last meal should not be later than 18-19 hours on the eve of the examination. On the day of the examination, brushing teeth is not prohibited. Removable dentures, which are poorly retained, are recommended to be removed. What medical preparation is carried out before the examination? Before the examination, the intake of special medications to eliminate mucus in the stomach, which complicates and prolongs the inspection, is recommended. For this purpose, the patient is advised to drink about 3 ml of Espumisan emulsion 10 minutes before the examination. Before the examination, the patient undergoes oropharyngeal irrigation with a medical drug that causes numbness in the throat. In some cases, if the patient has a pronounced gag reflex and feels anxious before the procedure, medication is administered intramuscularly. Our clinic offers the possibility of performing gastroscopy under sedation. The essence of the study. The patient lies on their left side. Throughout the examination, they have a plastic mouthpiece in their mouth — to avoid interfering with the advancement of the gastroscope and not to damage the device with their teeth. Breathing should be calm, deep. During the examination, the doctor inflates air into the stomach, to better examine it and smooth out the stomach folds. The duration of the study, as a rule, takes several minutes. There is no pain in the stomach during gastroscopy. What is a biopsy? During the examination, if necessary, the doctor performs a biopsy. For this purpose, thin medical instruments are inserted through the instrumental channel of the gastroscope, with which a small piece of the mucous membrane is pinched off. The procedure is painless. The biopsy is taken from ulcers, polyps, of tumors and other formations for determining their nature. How to behave after the examination? After gastroscopy without a biopsy, food intake is allowed after 30 minutes, if a biopsy was performed - intake of non-hot food is allowed after 1 hour.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a method of endoscopic diagnosis of diseases of the colon. During the examination, inflammatory processes, benign and malignant neoplasms, ulcers at the early stages of their development are detected. Compared to other diagnostic methods, colonoscopy under anesthesia has a clear advantage – modern colonoscopy equipment allows the doctor to diagnose and perform a biopsy simultaneously. The effectiveness of the colonoscopy depends on the proper preparation of the patient for this examination. That is, the patient must carefully follow all the doctor's instructions, including those for cleansing the colon. Indications for colonoscopy

- impurities in stool such as blood or mucus; - suspicion of any disease of the colon; - the presence of relatives with various tumors of the colon; - previously undergone surgeries on the colon; - to clarify data obtained from x-ray, ultrasound or other studies. As a regular screening procedure, colonoscopy is recommended for all men and women over 50 years - for early detection of colorectal cancer, as well as for the removal of «dangerous» polyps from an oncological perspective.

About Anesthesia During Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a relatively complex method of endoscopic examination of the colon, which is sometimes accompanied by discomfort and pain sensations. The risk of pain is significantly higher in the presence of adhesions in the abdominal cavity or when the colon is elongated with the formation of additional loops. Fortunately, pain and fear are no longer insurmountable obstacles to performing a quality endoscopic examination of the colon. In our clinic, colonoscopy is performed under light anesthesia. This is what’s called "medicated sleep," which allows the patient to sleep for a short period of time and thus completely eliminates pain and fear from the colonoscopy procedure. It all involves an intravenous injection with quick onset of sleep, which ends almost simultaneously with the completion of the procedure.
