Ultrasound of the abdominal organs allows for the assessment of the condition of the internal organs of the abdominal cavity: the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, as well as major blood vessels and bile ducts. The procedure is painless, safe, and does not require any intervention in the body.

Why an abdominal ultrasound is performed:
• To detect liver diseases (hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease).

What can be seen on an ultrasound:
• The size, shape, and structure of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen.

• The presence of fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites).

When it is prescribed:
• For abdominal pain or heaviness, especially after eating.
• For nausea, vomiting, jaundice of the skin and eyes.
• When gallstone disease or pancreatitis is suspected.
• For chronic liver and pancreas diseases.
• As part of a preventive check-up.

Preparation for the procedure:
• Exclude foods that cause gas formation (legumes, fresh vegetables, carbonated drinks, sweets) from the diet 2–3 days prior.
• The examination is conducted on an empty stomach (do not eat for 6–8 hours before the procedure).
• If the patient is taking medication, this should be discussed with the doctor in advance.

How the procedure is conducted:
• The patient lies on their back on a couch.
• A special gel is applied to the skin of the abdomen.
• The doctor moves the transducer over the abdomen in different positions, assessing the organs.
• The procedure takes 15–20 minutes.
