Second Trimester Screening During Pregnancy:

What is it?
• A routine ultrasound examination conducted in the second trimester of pregnancy.
• Typically performed between 18–21 weeks of gestation.
• The main goal is a detailed anatomical assessment of the fetus, detection of possible congenital anomalies, and monitoring the growth and condition of the baby.

Why is the second screening done?
• Detailed examination of the fetus's anatomy (often referred to as a "genetic ultrasound").
• Assessment of the normal development of the baby's organs and systems.
• Exclusion of congenital anomalies.
• Monitoring the growth, weight, and gestational age appropriateness of the fetus.
• Evaluation of the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid.

What can be seen on the ultrasound?
• The size and proportions of the fetus (biparietal diameter of the head, femur length, etc.).
• Formation of the brain, face, spine, heart, lungs, stomach, kidneys, and bladder.
• Condition of the heart (four-chamber view, major vessels).
• Fetal movements and position in the uterus.
• The baby's gender (if the position is favorable).
• Position and structure of the placenta, quantity and quality of amniotic fluid.

When is it scheduled?
• Routinely for all pregnant women between 18–21 weeks.
• Non-routinely if there are suspected abnormalities from the first screening results or if there are risk factors.

How is the procedure conducted?
• It is performed transabdominally (through the abdomen).
• The woman lies on her back, a special gel is applied to the abdominal skin, and the doctor moves the transducer, displaying the image on a screen.
• The procedure takes approximately 20–30 minutes.

The second screening is one of the most informative examinations during the entire pregnancy, as it allows for a highly detailed view of the fetus's organs.
