Tumor markers are biochemical substances (proteins, glycoproteins, antigens, etc. ) that can be elevated in tumor processes. They are measured in the blood (less commonly in other fluids) to aid in diagnosis, monitoring, prognosis, and evaluating treatment effectiveness.
Important: The presence of a tumor marker alone does not diagnose cancer—this test is often supplemented with clinical examination, imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI), and biopsy. There can be false-positive results in benign conditions, inflammation, pregnancy, and more.
