Abdominal ultrasound: what is it for?

Ultrasonography (US) of the abdominal cavity is one of the most common diagnostic methods in medicine.
It is a safe and effective procedure that allows doctors to assess the condition of the abdominal organs without the need for invasive procedures.

Why is abdominal US performed?

Abdominal US is performed for the diagnosis of various diseases and conditions of the internal abdominal organs.
This type of examination may be prescribed to identify the following conditions:
1.
Liver: Ultrasound allows for the assessment of liver size, tissue structure, the presence of tumors, cirrhosis, or fatty degeneration.

2. Gallbladder and bile ducts: Allows for the detection of stones in the gallbladder or ducts and the assessment of their condition.

3. Spleen: Ultrasound helps determine the size of the spleen, the presence of tumors or other pathologies.

4. Pancreas: Allows for the detection of inflammatory processes, cysts, tumors, or other changes.

5. Kidneys and bladder: Ultrasound helps assess the size of the kidneys, the presence of stones.
tumors or other changes in the structure of the organs of the genitourinary system.
6.
Intestines: Although the intestines are not always well visualized during an abdominal ultrasound,
the procedure can be used to detect certain changes or diseases.

### Abdominal Ultrasound Procedure
During the ultrasound examination, the patient lies on their back on a couch,
exposing the abdominal area.
The ultrasound doctor or a specially trained technician (sonographer) applies gel to the skin and places the ultrasound transducer head on it.
The sensor emits ultrasonic waves, which are reflected off internal organs and transmitted to the computer, where an image is created.

The procedure usually does not cause pain or discomfort and lasts from 15 to 30 minutes.
After the study is completed, the doctor analyzes the obtained data and makes a conclusion,
which helps to make the correct diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Abdominal ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic method,
which allows doctors to obtain information about the condition of the abdominal organs without surgical intervention. This method is absolutely safe, non-invasive, and widely used to detect various diseases and conditions of the abdominal organs.
