After the umbilical cord dries out and falls off, a wound remains in the baby's navel area.
Its healing is an extremely important process,
as the umbilical wound can become an entry point for infection.
Any changes in the umbilical wound (redness of the skin around it,
swelling,
profuse discharge,
bleeding,
appearance of growths or pus at the bottom,
prolonged scarring) - is a reason to consult a doctor!
By the time of discharge from the maternity hospital (on the 4-5th day of the baby's life), the umbilical cord may still be in place,
and sometimes the scab has already fallen off, and the wound is covered with a crust, there might be some slight serous discharge. With proper care, the crust disappears within 12-15 days of life. Sometimes the process is delayed - for example, if the navel lies deep. The same can happen if the baby's diapers or clothes fit too tightly around that area of the body, compressing the skin around the wound. In this case, the umbilical wound begins to ooze and heals poorly.
If the baby is discharged home with the umbilical cord still attached, you should inspect it daily,
monitor its proper drying. Treat it with calendula tincture if necessary, carefully turning and lifting.
The navel scab (after the umbilical cord falls off) needs to be treated when changes, as mentioned above, appear. First, drop 3% hydrogen peroxide with a sterile pipette, then remove the foamy residue with a clean cotton swab. Gently dab the scab with rotary motions, using a new cotton ball each time. When the scab dries,
