Shelton's Food Combining System

Herbert Shelton (1895–1985) — American physician,
educator,
prominent representative of the Natural Hygiene movement of the 20th century.
Herbert Shelton's views may differ from modern dietetics,
but the essence of his system is as follows: during one meal, it is not allowed to mix foods
that are digested in the stomach in different,
from a chemical point of view,
environments.









All products, according to Shelton's classification based on digestion, are divided into three groups: some require an acidic environment,
others require an alkaline environment,
and the third group requires a neutral environment.









Meat,
milk,
fish,
eggs are well digested in an acidic environment; bread,
sugar,
grains, and some vegetables that are rich in carbohydrates—in an alkaline environment; and a number of vegetables (greens,
cabbage,
tomatoes,
peppers,

The main principles of the theory of separate nutrition








• You cannot mix alkaline and acidic processes in the stomach,
which means you cannot eat incompatible foods.










• Do not eat proteins together with carbohydrates and fats. Eat simple food from a few types of products.








• Do not eat carbohydrate and acidic foods in one meal.
This means you shouldn't eat bread,
potatoes,
peas,
beans,
bananas,
dates, and other carbohydrate foods with lemon,
orange,
grapefruit,
pineapple,
tomatoes, and other acidic fruits.
Tomatoes should never be combined with any starchy food.








• Never eat concentrated protein and concentrated carbohydrates in one meal.
This means: do not eat nuts,
meat,
eggs,
cheese, and other protein foods together with bread,
cereals,
potatoes.









• You should eat only when you feel hungry.









• Never eat when in pain, mental or physical discomfort.








• Never eat during intense work,
physical or mental,
as well as in the short time before and after work.









• Do not drink while eating!
You can drink water 10-15 minutes before eating,
30 minutes after consuming fruits,

• Morning meals are best skipped altogether or limited to juice.
The midday meal should be very light,
and the evening meal the largest and should take place only after a short rest from work.









• Fruits are best eaten separately,

• Eat at least one large serving of salad per day, containing cabbage, lettuce, celery, cucumbers, radishes, onions, tomatoes, watercress, parsley. Juices from cabbage and other vegetables, when added to food, will significantly increase the secretion of gastric juice.

• Consume fats in moderation.








• Cook only a few types of food at a time and cook them very briefly.

• Consider only pure water as a drink, other "drinks" are food (fruit juices, milk, etc.) or poisons (coffee, tea, cocoa, wine, soda beverages).

• Avoid harmful and useless vegetables and fruits.
From the list of commonly found foods, it is best to exclude rhubarb and gooseberries from your diet.
