The active ingredient of the medication is an antibiotic from the macrolide group, a semi-synthetic derivative of erythromycin. Azithromycin was developed to avoid some of the drawbacks of erythromycin. The mechanism of action common to the entire macrolide group is based on the inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis.
Indications for use:
The medication is indicated for the treatment of the following infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to it:
• Lower respiratory tract infections: exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia of mild to moderate severity;
• Upper respiratory tract infections: inflammation of the throat or tonsils, sinusitis;
• Acute otitis media;
• Skin and soft tissue infections of mild to moderate severity: for example, folliculitis, cellulitis, erysipelas;
• Uncomplicated infections of the urethra and cervix caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
Usage and Dosage:
The intake of tablets is not dependent on meal times.
The doctor selects the dosage individually depending on the indications, severity of the infection, sensitivity of the microorganisms, and the patient's condition. Additional dosage adjustments are required for some special groups of patients.
For adults and children weighing more than 45 kg, the standard prescription is 500 mg once daily for 3 days or 500 mg once on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days (in both dosing regimens, the total dose is 1500 mg).
