Treatment of Phlebitis

Phlebitis is an inflammation of the venous wall, most commonly occurring in the lower extremities. The condition can be either independent or a complication of varicose veins, injuries, injections, or infections. Without treatment, phlebitis can progress to thrombophlebitis, a condition accompanied by the formation of blood clots, increasing the risk of complications, including thromboembolism.

🔹 Main symptoms of phlebitis:
Redness and tenderness along the vein

Hardening or "cord" under the skin

Swelling of the limb

Increased local temperature

Burning sensation or heaviness

🔹 Types of phlebitis:
Superficial phlebitis — affects superficial veins, often accompanies varicose veins.

Deep phlebitis (phlebothrombosis) — inflammation of deep veins, requires urgent treatment.

Post-injection phlebitis — occurs after intravenous infusions or catheterization.

Methods of treating phlebitis
Treatment depends on the location, cause, and stage of the disease. It generally includes medication therapy, local treatment, physiotherapy, and lifestyle changes.

✅ Medication treatment includes:
1. Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Used to relieve pain, inflammation, and swelling:

Diclofenac

Ibuprofen

Ketoprofen

2. Venotonics (angioprotectors)
Strengthen vessel walls, improve venous outflow:

Diosmin (Detralex, Phlebodia)

Troxerutin (Troxevasin)

Aescusan (horse chestnut-based)

3. Anticoagulants
Prescribed for the risk of thrombosis:

Heparin (intravenously or subcutaneously)

Enoxaparin (Clexane)

Warfarin, Rivaroxaban — orally for deep forms

4. Topical preparations
Applied as gels and ointments to reduce inflammation and improve microcirculation:

Heparin ointment

Lioton gel

Troxevasin gel

Indovazin

Additional methods
Compression therapy — wearing elastic bandages or medical compression garments (stockings, socks) to improve venous outflow.

Physiotherapy — UHF, magnetotherapy, laser therapy help reduce inflammation.

Rest and elevated limb position — reduce swelling and venous load.

Important to know
Phlebitis requires mandatory consultation with a phlebologist. Self-treatment can lead to dangerous complications. This is especially true for deep forms, which may present with minimal symptoms but pose a high risk to life.
